Right then, some of you will by now have seen the carnage, lol, a melted plug and a burnt head gasket, whoopee. Could have fixed that at the road side if you had the spares, but there you go Reason, we built the engine with the exacting same compression ratio as the original cooper engine, 10:1. The ECU controlling the fueling and ignition is a non cooper ECU which normaly runs 9.4:1 compression ratio. The resulting increase in compression ratio putting the ignition of the non cooper ECU closser to detonation, not normaly a problem on 95 unleaded. A little birdie tells me he then filled the tank with sub 95 octane fuel Which rover state NOT to do, But if its all you got, what can you do, again putting the engine closser to detonation Those carrbies who filled up on the same fuel and never suffered - simple answer, your ignition is not optimised to give max torque before detonation, something you will find difficult to do with a dizzy ;D and your engine is not running to its potential. Anyway I suspect that at some point in the ignition map, not necisarly all the time, the engine has run through the detonation limitation point, causing the plug to melt and the waffer thin BK450 gasket to burn through. It wasnt too far into det to cause any serious damage, the block and head are perfectly fine, and the paint is still there, contrary to what some have said . Once the gasket has started to burn through it will continue, even when the engine has recovered from det. The valves showing signs of running a little hotter on number two cylinder, add to that, as the plug gap gets smaller the plug tends to burn itself out as well. Once the plug electrodes are touching, no spark is produced, it becomes an electric heater. Having said all that, it could just be down to the plug failing turning itself into a glow plug and causing det and burning the gasket. We will never know. I have never seen a plug like that before and i can only see it happening in det circumstances. An AF460 gasket to bring the compression ratio down a bit, new oil, coolant and a new set of plugs and it will be as good as new Here endeth tonights lesson on detonation
